How to Calculate DA Arrears?
Dearness Allowance (DA) Arrears arise when the government announces a DA hike with retrospective effect. For example, if a hike is announced in March but effective from January, you are entitled to the difference for January and February.
The Formula
Arrears = (Basic Pay × New DA%) - (Basic Pay × Old DA%)
OR simply:
Arrears = Basic Pay × (Difference in DA%)
Transport Allowance (TPTA) Arrears
Many employees forget that Transport Allowance is also linked to DA. When DA increases, the DA component on your Transport Allowance also goes up.
TPTA Formula:
TPTA Arrears = (TPTA Base Rate × New DA%) - (TPTA Base Rate × Old DA%)
*TPTA Base Rate depends on your Pay Level and City Class (Tpt Cities vs Others).
Calculation Example
Let's say your Basic Pay is ₹50,000. DA hikes from 46% to 50% (4% increase) effective from Jan 1st.
- Old DA Amount (46%): ₹50,000 × 46% = ₹23,000
- New DA Amount (50%): ₹50,000 × 50% = ₹25,000
- Difference (Arrears per month): ₹2,000
- For 3 months (Jan-Mar): ₹2,000 × 3 = ₹6,000 Total Arrears.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does TPTA Affect Arrears?
Transport Allowance (TPTA) also has a DA component. When DA rises (e.g., from 46% to 50%), the DA on TPTA also rises. This calculator automatically adds that difference if you select "Add TPTA Arrears".
Is this valid for Pensioners?
Yes. Pensioners receive Dearness Relief (DR) which follows the same rates as DA. Simply enter your Basic Pension in the "Basic Pay" field to calculate your DR arrears.
When is DA Arrears paid?
DA hikes are usually announced in March (for Jan) and September (for July). Arrears are typically credited in the month's salary following the official Cabinet approval.
Will 8th Pay Commission change this?
The 8th Pay Commission (expected ~2026) may revise the base structure, but the concept of DA Arrears buffering inflation will likely remain. This tool supports the current 7th CPC matrix.
