How is HRA Exemption Calculated?

Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, the HRA exemption is calculated as the lowest of the following three values. The remaining HRA amount is added to your taxable income.

2

Rent - 10% Salary

Actual Rent Paid minus 10% of (Basic + DA).

3

50% or 40%

50% of Salary for Metro Cities, 40% for Non-Metro.

Which cities are considered 'Metro' for HRA?

Only 4 cities in India qualify for the 50% criteria (Metro) for HRA calculation:

  • Delhi
  • Mumbai
  • Kolkata
  • Chennai

*Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, etc., are considered Non-Metro (40%) for HRA purposes, despite being major IT hubs.

Important Rules

  • Paying Rent to Parents: You can claim HRA by paying rent to parents, provided they own the house and declare it as income. You cannot pay rent to your spouse.
