Pay structure
Indian Army salary — basic pay, MSP, and why two officers on the same rank take home different amounts
A freshly commissioned Lieutenant starts on Pay Level 10 at ₹56,100 basic — but that number alone tells you almost nothing about monthly cash. Military Service Pay (₹15,500/month for officers from Lieutenant through Brigadier) sits on top of basic. Dearness Allowance, HRA, field-area allowances, and high-altitude credits stack differently depending on whether you are in Leh or Lucknow.
Indian Army salary follows the Defence Forces pay matrix under the 7th Central Pay Commission. PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) and JCO ranks use separate matrix levels from commissioned officers. Agniveer pay is a different contract altogether — do not compare Agniveer emoluments to a Sepoy on permanent commission without reading the scheme rules.
