How Indian Army pay works

Pay structure

Indian Army salary — basic pay, MSP, and why two officers on the same rank take home different amounts

A freshly commissioned Lieutenant starts on Pay Level 10 at ₹56,100 basic — but that number alone tells you almost nothing about monthly cash. Military Service Pay (₹15,500/month for officers from Lieutenant through Brigadier) sits on top of basic. Dearness Allowance, HRA, field-area allowances, and high-altitude credits stack differently depending on whether you are in Leh or Lucknow.

Indian Army salary follows the Defence Forces pay matrix under the 7th Central Pay Commission. PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank) and JCO ranks use separate matrix levels from commissioned officers. Agniveer pay is a different contract altogether — do not compare Agniveer emoluments to a Sepoy on permanent commission without reading the scheme rules.

This hub is the parent page for rank-wise Army salary guides on DesiSalary. Rank pages publish incrementally — only ranks with live guides appear as links below. No placeholder URLs, no guessed in-hand figures presented as official.

In-hand salary

Basic Pay → MSP → Allowances → Gross → Deductions → In-Hand

Gross Army pay adds applicable allowances to basic plus MSP. In-hand subtracts NPS (where applicable), income tax, and other statutory deductions. A Lieutenant posted to a field area with high-altitude allowance can gross significantly more than a peer in a peace station — both on ₹56,100 basic.

We do not publish one universal “Army in-hand salary” figure on this hub. Posting, family accommodation, ration entitlements, and individual tax declarations move net pay. Use rank-specific pages and the in-hand calculator when they are linked — always labelled as estimates.

Allowances

Army pay and allowances — eligibility beats entitlement

Dearness Allowance revises on the central government cycle. HRA follows X/Y/Z classification unless official married accommodation replaces it. Field Area Allowance, High Altitude Allowance, and Risk & Hardship Allowance apply when posting and duty conditions qualify — not because you wear the uniform.

Uniform and dress allowances exist for eligible categories. Transport-related components vary by rules in force. Every allowance page on DesiSalary will link from here only after it is published; until then the topics are listed without dead URLs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Indian Army salary?

Army pay follows the Defence Forces pay matrix under 7th CPC — basic pay plus Military Service Pay (for eligible ranks), DA, HRA, and posting-specific allowances. In-hand varies by rank, posting, and deductions. See rank-wise pages as they publish.

What is Army in-hand salary?

In-hand = gross earnings minus NPS, tax, and other deductions. No single figure applies to all soldiers. Use rank-specific guides and calculators labelled as estimates.

What is Military Service Pay in the Army?

MSP is separate from basic pay. Officers from Lieutenant through Brigadier receive ₹15,500/month MSP under notified Defence pay rules. PBOR MSP differs by rank.

What is Agniveer salary?

Agniveer monthly emoluments follow the Agnipath scheme — distinct from permanent PBOR pay matrix. Dedicated Agniveer guides will link from this hub when published.

How is Army rank-wise salary structured?

Sepoy through Subedar Major use PBOR/JCO matrix levels. Commissioned officers from Lieutenant upward use officer matrix levels (Lieutenant entry: Level 10, ₹56,100 basic). Rank salary pages publish incrementally on this hub.

What is Army pension?

Retirement benefits depend on service type, entry date (NPS vs legacy pension), and length of service. See pension section on this hub and the pension calculator for planning estimates.

How will 8th Pay Commission affect Army salary?

Until government notification, official pay remains 7th CPC. DesiSalary 8th Pay hub uses illustrative fitment scenarios only — not confirmed Army salary.

How do I become an Army officer and what is starting pay?

Routes include NDA, CDS, SSC, and TES. On commissioning, pay fixes at the first cell of the notified level (Lieutenant: Level 10, ₹56,100 basic + MSP). Entry guides link from the career section as published.
